simple saturday links 4/17/10
Good Saturday to you all! I have a couple gnarly articles for you this week, as usual. But first, the winner from my Rework giveaway. There were 24 comments at the time of the drawing and the random number generator spit out the number 9. Counting down the comments from the oldest to the newest, I landed on simplyminded.net’s own Dave Thielen! Dave, email me your address and I will get the book in the mail to you shortly. Thank you to all who entered! I plan on doing more of these in the future so keep your eyes open.
Here are this week’s batch of articles I particularly enjoyed.
aspirant sutra: proof of love — I actually noticed this article two weeks but completely forgot to mention it. I love reading stories of people who are completely walking the walk when it comes to living minimally and consciously. Karo discusses why she is not wearing an engagement ring despite her recent engagement. An excellent article with a very good question to ponder, “when did the engagement ring become proof of love?”
mnmlist: you need less than you think – As always, Leo writes a great article questioning the status quo in terms of minimalism. He brings up a few of the “necessities” of the modern era and questions how necessary they actually are. My favorite thought exercise along these lines, since I’m a history nerd, is to think about how our grandparents lived. They didn’t have a lot of the same “necessities” we need today and somehow they lived happy and fulfilled lives. Makes you think.
far beyond the stars: 26 essential ways to achieve minimalist freedom — Everett generates a great list of 26 activities or actions to take that will move you in the direction of minimalism. A lot of these are things you’ve probably heard before but there are a few fresh ideas like, “Have opinions about things that matter.” If you decide to do number 17, make sure you email me and let me know so I can follow your progress!
refocuser: only perfect practice makes perfect — As a hockey coach I think about the idea of practice a lot. Practicing just for the sake of practicing does nobody any good. It’s a lot like having meetings for the sake of having meetings. This article talks about the importance of how we practice the things we want to perfect.
grokkery: becoming a breathing master – When is the last time you thought about your breathing? Admittedly, it’s been awhile for me. I think Jonathan has convinced me to think about my breathing a little bit more. At least, I can’t wait to practice 4-step breathing during my next run.
