simple saturday links 1/9/2010

Before we get to the two links for today, I have a brief announcement. I am currently accepting guest posts to be published here on thesimplerlife.net. If you are interested in writing an article for this site feel free to contact me via twitter (@samspurlin) or send me an email samspurlin AT gmail.com.  I’d really like to get some other voices on here from time to time.

With that out of the way, here are two of my favorite links from this week:

  • obadiah parker: amazing acoustic cover of “hey ya”– Some of you may not really care about this as it is not an article, but I just wanted to point out this awesome cover of Outkast. Just a guy and a guitar doing an incredible rendition of “Hey Ya.” I love how this version really brings out the lyrics of the song. Doesn’t get a whole lot simpler, or better, than this.
  • you simplified.net: the education of a (not so) young man– Frequent thesimplerlife.net commenter Charley is the author of this new and very interesting blog. In this post he lays out the 13 books he plans to read this year. I like how he has planned out a syllabus for himself. The things that we take the time to plan are often those that we end up sticking with for the long term.

I save articles and blog posts that have spoken to me in some way in Evernote. Every Saturday I will provide a couple of these links with a short blurb as to why I saved them. Hopefully this will provide some new and interesting reading that you may not find otherwise. Feel free to point me toward any articles that you think I might enjoy as well.

I really enjoyed the Obadiah Parker link, for I think it has kind of re-inspired me. I noticed recently that I've lost a lot of passion in what I'm studying and am having problems finding it again. Seeing the look on the face of this man while he plays and hearing how heartfelt he sings the song is making me think about how others perceive my own performances in the classroom and on stage in both formal and informal performances. Needless to say, there is lots to work on.
  • Thanks for the mention, Sam. More importantly, thanks for the link to Obadiah Parker's cover. I thought it was a Black Eyed Peas toon but I am not exactly up on hip hop. I used to perform solo acoustic and with a three piece and we have a myspace page if you look up scribeforthetribemusic. Of course, I haven't half the voice or talent as Obadiah but we had a lot of fun, got tons of gigs in the city and made a record when I had time to do it before the triplets arrived last year.

Listening to him makes me want to get back into it again. These are the genre of musicians I cut my teeth with in coffee houses. Perhaps some day again...

    Regards,
    Charley
