looking forward and a brief announcement

I launched this blog on October 12th, 2009. Since that day, I’ve already had more success than I thought I would. To date, I’ve had 16,286 visits to this blog. Granted, a huge, huge chunk of that was from one article that received a decent amount of attention on reddit.com. However, even with that traffic removed I’ve been very happy with how much readership I have achieved so far. With that being said, I am not satisfied with what I have achieved so far and have big goals for 2010. This blog represents my first writing effort that has lasted for more than a couple weeks. I have started at least 7 or 8 other blogs that have all fizzled out. For the first time I feel like I have created something that has the potential to stick around for a little while.

I’ve decided to break up my goals for 2010 into sections. From now until April 1st, from April 1st to July 1st, and from July 1st to January 1st, 2011.

By April 1st, 2010

  • Average 1,000 visits per week.
  • Write and publish 2 articles per week.
  • Have 3 guest posts published on other blogs.
  • Have 100 RSS subscribers.

By July 1st, 2010

  • Average 3,000 visits per week.
  • Write and publish 2 articles per week.
  • Have 6 guest posts published on other blogs.
  • Have 200 RSS subscribers.
  • Re-design blog with logo.
  • Earn $50 from blog.

By January 1st, 2011

  • Average 7,000 visits per week.
  • Write and publish 2 articles per week.
  • Have 12 published guest posts on other blogs.
  • Have 400 RSS subscribers.
  • Begin work on an ebook.
  • Earn $200 from blog.

I’m really shooting in the dark as far as these numbers go. I think they are ambitious while also being attainable, but I really can’t be sure.

Lastly, a quick administrative announcement. I have been posting 3 articles per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) with an extra “Simple Saturday Links” post up to this point. Starting this week I will change the posting schedule to Tuesday and Thursday while continuing the extra post (book review, video, or Simple Saturday Links) on Saturday. I want to make sure that I focus on creating quality content and removing the responsibility of a third post every week will allow me to write better articles.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for being a part of this endeavor. A few of you (Axel, Flash, and Charley) have even taken the time to comment on multiple articles. I really, really appreciate it and as silly as it seems, knowing that at least three people will be reading what I write is a huge motivational boost.

Thanks again and here’s to a bigger and better 2010!

  • Hi Sam,

I just found your blog today. Thank you for sharing! In particular, I love this plan and these goals.

I love that you share your frustration over the other blogs that have fizzed. I also love that are energized by the potential in this one, and are moving forward (shooting in the dark or not!)

It fits in so nicely with the post you did today about the Dalai Lama... resistance helps us grow. And also, as the Dalai Lama so nicely reminds us, there is always, always hope... and friendship and inspiration and help.

    Cheers & happy new year,
    Shea
  • I may not comment, but you can count it as "at least 4 people." Happy New Year to you, best wishes for 2010 and may it be not only simpler, but *magical.*

Excellent! Glad to have you :)
  • Hi Sam,

Thanks for the shout-out. I liked the way you've chunked your goals. I have similar 2010 traffic goals as you but I've been mired in the minutiae of creating a project plan for it. Perhaps I need to step back and see the forest for the trees.

I think if you keep to your writing schedule and continue to network with comments and guest articles, you'll do great.

    Warm Regards from frozen Buffalo,
    - Charley

Thanks for the kind words and advice. Usually I am one who errs on the side of over planning so I tried to focus on not getting too specific with my goals. It helps that I have no experience setting goals for blogs so I'm really swinging with my eyes closed on this one.
