thanksgiving is more than once a year

3061648816_c5a4bf7bd6I realize that I’m a little bit late with my Thanksgiving-themed post. However, that is not a factor of my procrastination (well, not solely). I love the idea of a holiday where we take time to think and reflect on what we are thankful for (historical dubiousness ignored). However, I hate that most people only seem to think about this once a year, November 26th. Cultivating gratitude is such a simpler way to improve your general attitude and outlook on life. I am by no means a shining example of doing so. I take the amazing aspects of my life for granted far more than I should. So, even though it has only been a week and a day since Thanksgiving, I encourage you to take time to think about what you are thankful for on a much more than yearly basis. When things aren’t going the greatest or you are in some sort of slump, a list of the things you are thankful for can be a great eye-opener.

With that in mind, here is a quick list of what I’m thankful for:

  1. My family: It can be easy to take them for granted now that I am living at home again and see everybody everyday.
  2. Heather: My girlfriend has had an incredible impact on my life up to this point. She always encourages me in everything I do (regardless of nerdiness) while also helping keep me honest. I cherish her intelligence and steadying influence on my life.
  3. My Economic Situation: I’m not poor. I have very low expenses due to coming home to live after graduating from college. I have enough money to own a laptop, drive a car, and to frequent the occasional coffee shop (where I happen to be writing this right now!). I know that my being born into a comparatively favorable economic situation had nothing to do with my own intelligence or industriousness. I could have easily been born in the slums of India. Instead, by sheer luck I was born into a middle class family in the Midwest United States.

What are you thankful for? How often do you think you should ask yourself that question to help keep yourself grounded and gracious?
